The town was founded by Zephaniah Kingsley back in 1835. He set up the town with 53 slaves he’d freed from Florida plantations, and his family. Today, descendants of both the Kingsley family and the slaves still reside here.

Things to do in Cabarete
The vast range of activities on offer in Cabarete ensure you never run out of things to do throughout your vacation. Its range of sporting activities are particularly good, with everything from kite surfing and diving to windsurfing and horseback riding.
Take a horseback ride through the stunning natural landscape, including picturesque rides across the beach. The Equestrian Center at Sea Horse Ranch is one of the best to book a tour through, with more than seven miles of bridle paths to explore.
Culture and art lovers will enjoy a visit to the Chilvers Fine Art Gallery, situated right by the beach. Or, if you fancy a more adventurous activity, take a tour of the caves at Las Cuevas de Cabarete.
The beaches in Cabarete are exquisite, with several to choose from. The main Cabarete Beach is one of the most popular, boasting warm waters most of the year round. There are various restaurants serving up delicious food here, alongside nightclubs and a range of bars.
If you’re a keen surfer, or you’re looking to escape the crowds of the main beach, Encuentro is the place to go. It boasts plenty of parking and great onsite facilities. The waves here are suitable for all levels, and there are some excellent surfing schools available.
Chill out and watch kitesurfing enthusiasts at the famous Kite Beach. With its relaxed atmosphere and selection of great restaurants, the beach boasts spectacular scenery. The food here is also some of the best in the town. This is an especially good beach to visit with the kids.
