Things to do in Costa Rica
Whether you’re looking for high-end hotels and fine foods, or you prefer a day’s surfing followed by a beer on the sand, there's plenty to do in Costa Rica.
Territorio de Zaguates is a large dog sanctuary, located on the side of a mountain north of the capital, San Jose. This haven has saved thousands of stray dogs and offered them a safe space to roam. To get there, you’ll need to hike for two miles through parkland, but the destination is worth the trip. Dog lovers will enjoy interacting with them, and making it more likely they'll be adopted into new homes of their own.
Rio Celeste, or the ‘sky-blue river’ runs through the Tenorio Volcano National Park. The unusual color really has to be seen to be believed. It occurs where two clearwater rivers join. The minerals of the two waters mix together and this creates the illusion of a sky-blue river. Seeing photos of this river is not enough – they look like they must have been photoshopped. Hike straight to Laguna Azul and walk back towards the waterfall for the best views. Swimming in the park is banned, but the river crosses over onto other land in places, so there will be opportunities for a dip.
Costa Rica beaches
With two beautiful coastlines bordered by lush jungle, Costa Rica is renowned for having some of Central America’s best beaches.
- Playa Conchal - North of Tamarindo, the bright white sands of Playa Conchal are a must-see. This bright blue bay is ideal for snorkeling and swimming expeditions. Its location means that Playa Conchal goes unnoticed by most visitors. However, it really is a secret paradise.
- Manuel Antonio - This incredible beach is located within Manuel Antonio National Park. The calm waters here make it a perfect choice for families with children. The national park itself is packed with wildlife. You'll most likely see howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, sloths and green iguanas. Manuel Antonio is also a great place to spot the endangered squirrel monkey.
- Playa Flamingo - North of Playa Conchal, Playa Flamingo has the perfect blend of calm waves and high-end amenities. This makes it a top choice for families. The fine sands slope gradually into the water, and it’s also a great place to watch the sunset. The atmosphere here is both relaxed and upscale. There are plenty of nearby restaurants, and access to watersports such as sailing and scuba diving.
