The area was established in 1960 by the developer Norman Johnson. The community was originally going to be named Sunset Village, but residents weren’t happy with the proposed name. So, they decided to change it to Sunrise Golf Village. That name was changed again in 1971 to the City of Sunrise, and today, it's simply referred to as Sunrise.
